High-end smartphones these days are powerful enough to sometimes run even operating systems meant for desktops, so mobile gaming is no sweat at all. Gaming smartphones, however, still have a few advantages, particularly when it comes to more aggressive cooling systems. Some even dare to use a tiny fan, trading dust and water protection for better thermals.
GameSir just launched a new controller that will make your stylish and luxurious handset a bit more game-worthy. The brand, best known for mobile controllers, is combining two common gaming accessories so you won’t have to choose between powerful controls or cooling. And it does seem to work, except for a very important caveat.
Designer: GameSir
Mobile games are mostly designed primarily for touch, but that isn’t always the best way to experience them. Fingers will naturally cover up parts of the screen and touch controls lack the tactile feeling of buttons and joysticks. That’s why some more avid mobile gamers prefer attaching a controller to their smartphone to bring a more console-like experience.
The new GameSir X3 Pro offers that same convenience with an added twist. It has a built-in cooling system compromised of a passive Peltier cooling plate as well as an active fan to better draw heat away from the phone and maintain maximum performance. Cooling fan accessories for phones do exist, but you can’t use them if you already have a mobile controller snapped on.
This would have been a great deal if not for the fact that you need to have the GameSir X3 Pro plugged in to actually use the fan. It’s a bit of an odd design considering it connects to the phone via USB-C, meaning it could draw power from the phone if necessary. At least it supports pass-through charging so you can keep the controller on while charging the phone.
Aside from that rare built-in cooling fan, the GameSir X3 Pro also offers a few desirable gaming features, like rumble motors for vibration, hall effect sticks, and customizable caps. You can even remove the grip if you want a more compact form at the expense of ergonomics. The GameSir X3 Pro is definitely an interesting design, but the requirement to have the fan powered externally might be a deal-breaker for gamers who are always on the go.
