Garmin Index Sleep Monitor is a smart band that tracks your sleep, fitness, and recovery

Navigation expert Garmin is getting more serious about monitoring our sleeping patterns and overall health. The smartwatch maker has launched the new Index Sleep Monitor, a band designed to provide users with a detailed analysis of their overnight sleep patterns and the body’s recovery, among other features. Meant to be worn around the arm, the Garmin device—like other wearables—tracks sleep stages, breathing variations, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, skin temperature, stress levels, and the Body Battery.

Biologically, our bodies are not designed for the fast-paced, perpetually screen-glued world. But that’s the reality, and its first visible side effect is sleep-deprived individuals. Millions of people today struggle to sleep well and, as a result, turn to advanced sleep and health monitoring devices, which may be doing more psychological harm than helping with insomnia.

According to a New York Times report, ‘Sleep Tracker Could Make Your Insomnia Worse;’ sleep monitoring devices could be making our sleep quality worse, partly because of inaccurate data. People often rely heavily on this information, which can increase anxiety, ultimately making it harder to fall asleep.

With Garmin’s trusted expertise, one can expect the company to address some of these accuracy concerns with the Index Sleep Monitor. According to the information from its press release, by wearing this sleep monitoring band every night, the user can have near-accurate and in-depth insight about their sleep pattern, ‘and a more complete picture of fitness and recovery.’ As part of the brand’s innovative health and wellness products, the band designed to be worn around the upper arm takes the overnight sleep data and uploads it to the Garmin Connect app where this information syncs with other vitals recorded on Garmin smartwatch, so any gaps in data can filled with cross-sharing of information, which is where increase in data accuracy is a possibility.

The Index Sleep Monitor is a small Apple Air Tag-like device that slots into the band, which is available in two size configurations – XS to S and M to XL. Being lightweight and cumbersome to sleep with, the band is required to be worn every night for better and more accurate performance. You can easily remove the hardware from the band and wash it without worrying. The device has a seven-day battery life and comes with an interesting smart wake alarm. This is a subtle vibration the device makes to wake you up when it detects you’re in the lightest sleep stage during your pre-scheduled wake-up time. This is to ensure you wake up peacefully and not jolt out of your deep sleep. In addition to the sleep tracking and usual health monitoring, the $170 Index Sleep Monitor tracks women’s health data, utilizing the skin temperature to offer insight into period prediction and ovulation windows, and Body Battery, which is the company’s body energy monitoring technology.
