Some of the most entertaining graphic design work can be found in competition calls for entries. Such materials are also among the more difficult assignments a designer can take on—to represent the subject being judged without overpowering the presumptive winners. Can you imagine the “call” besting the art and design it is supposed to be soliciting?
I am not saying this six-panel foldout illustrated by Seymour Chwast and art directed by Bob Anthony—which invited designers to enter the Society of Illustrators’ “HUMOR ’87” competition—is better than the selections that the judges ruled as winners, but … just saying!
Humor is Chwast’s stock and trade. Even his most serious work is imbued with a native sense of wit. While he was the perfect choice for this job, it seems he might also have been selected so that his work would be disqualified from running away with all the prizes …
