With handheld gaming devices now becoming the new black, it was only a matter of time before this world and the world of retro gaming collided. There are indeed a number of portable devices trying to relive the golden days of video gaming, particularly those influenced by the Game Boy era, but Nintendo wasn’t the only game in town back then. In fact, Atari could be considered an even bigger fish in that pond, but this My Arcade Gamestation Go isn’t simply content with slapping on some retro titles. It is, in essence, trying to create a delightful fusion of past and present in a very unique way.

It might look like a large handheld PC at first glance, but the Atari Gamestation Go is anything but. Yes, it has a D-Pad, four face buttons, and shoulder and trigger buttons, but the similarities end there. Quite notable are the controls you won’t find on any modern gaming handheld, such as the rotary dial, a.k.a. “paddle,” a miniature version of Atari’s iconic “Trak-Ball, and, the oddest one of all, a numeric keypad. These controls make it clear that My Arcade is trying to faithfully recreate the retro Atari experience, down to how you play games like Arkanoid, Pong, or Centipede.
Of course, the Atari Gamestation Go is also full of modern conveniences, like a large 7-inch screen that’s designed to support Atari: Recharged titles. There’s an HDMI port for playing on an even bigger screen, USB-C ports to connect additional controllers, and Wi-Fi for updating the device in the future. The most interesting feature, however, is “Smart Glow” which will illuminate which controls are needed for which games. It’s a nice touch that makes playing retro titles more intuitive and helps ease younger gamers into these titles.
