We love Scriber, a recently released typeface by the award-winning independent foundry The Northern Block. TNB has previously been featured in our Type Tuesday column (Hubsch, released in 2023). Scriber’s origins and inspiration come from stencil graffiti, which emerged in the 1960s. Because of its easily replicable nature, stencil graffiti became the face of protest art and public demonstrations.
Scriber builds on stencil graffiti’s legacy in modern form, bringing precision to the traditional homegrown stencil aesthetic. The typeface is designed to work in both printed and digital contexts, leaning into uniformity with clean lines and sharp angles. Distinct stroke breaks give it an industrial quality that draws the eye. We can see Scriber in projects needing a technical feel. But perhaps Scriber calls to us because we feel compelled to return to the streets. Scriber can express the message in clear, striking form.
Available in 500 characters across six different weights, Scriber offers a bounty of OpenType features such as digital numerals, tabular figures, subscripts, fractions, ligatures, and case-sensitive letterforms. It also comes with additional language support for most European scripts.
