Debbie Millman never intended to write a book about gardening. But Timber Press (a gardening imprint of Hachette) saw a series of interstitials she created for TED, along with her Instagram stories of documenting her burgeoning gardening prowess during the pandemic, and that gave them an idea.
Millman says that Love Letter to a Garden is not just about sowing and reaping. It’s a visual memoir about meaning, purpose, and being present in the world. And wonder. Wonder about the connectedness of the universe, about a memory of a waterfall in her grandparents’ backyard in Borough Park, Brooklyn, and the revelation of potatoes (yes, you can simply plant an ear!). And, she admits that this book is full of her mistakes.
You have to surrender yourself to the garden. It’s been a good lesson.
