If you’ve watched any Korean drama or if you’ve actually been to Korea, you know that they love to drink alcohol. Drinking beer or soju or makgeolli is part of their every day lives, at least the ones that we see on our screens or when we go out when visiting the country. In fact, in n Korean culture, there’s a saying: “Alcohol and friendship grow better with time.” Damgeumju, traditionally crafted by aging selected ingredients over extended periods, embodies this sentiment, serving as a bridge between time and emotion.
The CYLO | SPACE AGING LIQUOR project emerges as a testament to human ingenuity, blending the realms of tradition and space exploration. Conceived by the Seoul-based design collective LFD, this avant-garde initiative reimagines the age-old Korean practice of “damgeumju”—infused liquor, by introducing it to the cosmos. CYLO propels the idea of “damgeumju” into the future by aging these infusions in the zero-gravity environment of space. This unique setting offers optimal conditions for developing deeper and more distinctive flavors, culminating in a beverage that transcends earthly experiences.

The name “CYLO” is a fusion of “Cycle” and “Silo,” symbolizing a storage vessel that embarks on a cyclical journey between Earth and space. The logo design further encapsulates this narrative: the tilted ‘Y’ and ‘L’ represent the ascent and descent of a spacecraft, while the mirrored ‘C’ and ‘O’ denote the cyclical nature of the voyage. Their goal is for us to eventually experience liquor that is aged 2.5 times faster in space under microgravity conditions. The chemical reactions will produce liquor that may come with new and unique flavors.
This “orbit blend” will be a result of sending liquor to space through the Cyloport, a structure with an entrance rising to the sky and then extending into a series of underground spaces. The lobby in this structure serves as the control tower that oversees the entire journey. Visitors then go to the Orbit-Blend Lab where they will be able to test different kinds of flavors and even choose their own ingredients to create their original infused liquor. There is a Cyllo bottle that holds the finished product with all the flavors and infusions while the Cy;o Pod is the one that takes the bottles to their journey in space through a single-unit satellite.
Beyond its innovative approach to liquor aging, CYLO invites individuals to partake in a singular experience that transcends time. By intertwining the past, present, and future, the project offers a moment of reflection and anticipation, encapsulated in a bottle. It’s not merely about savoring a drink; it’s about cherishing a narrative that spans across time and space. Of course this is still just a concept for now, but let’s see if it will actually be eventually viable.
