I used to believe that chairs were just meant to be functional and comfortable. I didn’t really care about the design or the story behind it, as long as I could sit on it and rest, read, or do my work, I was good. But having delved into contemporary furniture and all of these creative product designers over the past few years, I’ve realized that chairs can still be functional even as they have creative and unique designs, even if they’re just concepts for now.
Enter the Sitter Chair, a bold new concept from designer Liam de la Bedoyere that challenges our expectations of what seating can be. The Sitter Chair’s genius lies in its simplicity. A single shape, doubled up to form both a seat and a side table, this innovative design transforms one geometric form into a complete furniture solution. The concept features two chunky, L-shaped modules that lock together like puzzle pieces, creating what feels like adult-sized building blocks that happen to be incredibly functional.

What began as a concept for a 3D-printed chair has evolved into something far more tactile and inviting. Originally dreamed up as a 3D-printed concept, it has evolved into a functional sculpture, half furniture, half adult-sized building block. The transformation from digital prototype to plush, fabric-covered piece represents a fascinating design journey that bridges the gap between high-tech manufacturing and traditional comfort.
The Sitter Chair makes a statement through its striking color palette. One module comes in bold mustard yellow while the other features deep charcoal gray, both wrapped in soft, wooly fabric that creates an unexpected contrast. Who says brutalism can’t be cozy? The Sitter Chair is wrapped in soft fabric like a hug from a square robot. This fabric covering serves a dual purpose: it softens the otherwise chunky, sculptural form while maintaining the piece’s architectural integrity. The result is furniture that looks like it could have walked off a 3D printer and gotten upholstered on the way out.
The beauty of the Sitter Chair lies in its modular approach. The yellow section functions as a side table with a distinctive cut-out leg, while the darker piece forms a boxy chair with exaggerated block geometry. Both lock together like puzzle pieces, creating a seamless connection without requiring hinges, screws, or complex mechanisms. This Tetris-inspired design philosophy makes the chair both practical and playful. It doesn’t recline, rock, or swivel. Instead, it simply sits there, looking cool and holding your coffee or cocktail while providing surprisingly comfortable seating.
The Sitter Chair concept embodies a fresh approach to furniture design, where form and function aren’t competing forces but collaborative partners. While there are many complex furniture solutions right now, this piece proves that sometimes the most innovative designs are also the most elegantly simple.
