Deji Plaza Phase II unveils futuristic and artistic commerce space in Nanjing

Most are probably not that particular when it comes to the designs of malls, as long as we can find what we need and we don’t get easily lost in the maze of stores. But what if the space itself is a work of art? Deji Plaza Phase II has redefined the shopping experience in Nanjing with the unveiling of its fourth-floor Commercial & Art Bazaar in Nanjing, China. Spearheaded by chief designer Li Xiang and a talented team from X+Living, this renovation transforms mall culture into an immersive blend of art, emotion, and commerce.

Rather than following the traditional blueprint of commercial retail, the designers envisioned a vibrant urban market atmosphere. The space invites visitors to step into a world inspired by deep-sea landscapes and futuristic space capsules, where every step offers a new discovery. The design team integrated modular spaces and winding pathways, encouraging exploration and creating countless photo-worthy moments. This approach not only promotes foot traffic but also sparks curiosity—turning shopping into a journey of surprise and delight.

One of the standout features is the use of organic, streamlined shapes throughout the public areas. The designers drew inspiration from the flowing forms of water and the smooth contours of a capsule, infusing the space with gentle curves and rhythmic patterns. Glass and mirrored stainless steel are cleverly used to amplify light and depth, producing a shimmering effect reminiscent of sunlight dancing on the ocean floor. The soft blue palette adds to the sense of tranquility, creating an environment that feels both futuristic and calming.

Storefronts are reimagined with enlarged display windows and fluid lines, making brands more visible while giving the impression of shops floating in a serene underwater world. The interplay of color, light, and transparency not only catches the eye but also brings a sense of openness and calm. This thoughtful use of materials and lighting blurs the line between retail and art installation, ensuring visitors are continually engaged.

A highlight of the space is the ceiling-mounted whale installation, which seems to glide effortlessly above visitors. Its underside features playful graffiti, introducing a burst of creativity and street art energy. This installation is designed for flexibility, allowing it to be swapped out for special events or evolving themes, keeping the environment fresh and adaptable for future experiences. The escalator lobby is another visual treat, with fully enclosed elevators framed by glowing linear lights. This creates a tunnel-like passage that gives visitors the sensation of moving through time and space, adding a layer of drama to the everyday act of changing floors.

The Commercial & Art Bazaar at Deji Plaza Phase II is a shopping destination and a showcase of how innovative design can elevate commercial spaces into cultural landmarks. By prioritizing emotional resonance, storytelling, and interactive experiences, the designers have created a space that not only draws in shoppers but also encourages them to linger, explore, and share their experiences online. This renovation is a testament to the rise of the experience economy, where value is measured not just in products sold but in memorable moments created. Deji Plaza Phase II has set a new benchmark, transforming commercial real estate into a living canvas where art, emotion, and business thrive together.
