Matter flatwoven carpets weave digital randomness and Scandinavian craft together

The new MATTER collection from Snøhetta and Ege Carpets stands out as a radical rethinking of what carpets can be. MATTER is a flatwoven carpet collection shaped by digital randomness, advanced technology, and sustainable materials. It combines innovation with a respect for nature and craft to create a product that feels both futuristic and deeply human.

At the core of MATTER is a fresh approach to pattern-making. Inspired by the functional beauty of natural systems, Snøhetta developed a generative design process where randomness is not just accepted but embraced as the driving logic. Patterns are created using code, allowing algorithms to generate woven compositions that are always shifting and never exactly repeat. The result is a surface that feels alive—ordered yet unpredictable, much like the landscapes found in nature.

Designers: Snohetta, Ege Carpets

As Francesca Giulia Poli, Snøhetta’s Product Designer and project lead, describes, MATTER is about exploring scale, craftsmanship, and technology. The design team considered each carpet as a woven landscape, built from threads that can be individually manipulated. From code to pixel, pixel to thread, and thread to carpet, every step was an exploration of how micro-scale decisions could shape the overall feel of a space. The finished carpets feel uniform from a distance but reveal constant, subtle changes as you move through the room.

Crafted with Ege’s most advanced flatweave loom, MATTER is digitally generated and woven to last. Each carpet is made from carefully selected recycled yarns, chosen for both their environmental impact and aesthetic quality. Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the process, from minimizing waste during production to ensuring the carpets remain durable and beautiful in high-use spaces.

The collection features two color palettes, each with 18 base colors. One palette uses muted beige and grey tones, while the other offers saturated blues and greens. This dual palette approach allows for maximum flexibility in design, letting the carpets shift character depending on the context, but always maintaining a cohesive look. Challenging the repetition often found in mass-produced products, MATTER draws inspiration from nature’s lack of uniformity. According to Marius Myking, Director of Snøhetta Product Design, the goal was to recreate the logic of natural randomness through a semi-controllable digital process. The resulting carpets resist repetition and celebrate variation at a microscopic level, ensuring that no two moments—or sections—are ever exactly alike.

More than just a product, MATTER represents a process and a philosophy. It is a digital landscape woven from intention, imperfection, and logic, valuing material honesty and the beauty of complexity. Built with circularity in mind, each carpet uses post-consumer and industrial recycled content and is designed to last. The unpredictable patterns help prevent visual fatigue, contributing to spaces that evolve over time. MATTER is the result of a continued collaboration between Snøhetta and Ege Carpets, bringing together architectural vision, technological innovation, and textile expertise. This collection invites a new way of seeing design as it is one that values both digital precision and the unpredictable richness of nature.
