The Daily Heller: Pull the Covers Over Your Head, It’s Time for Bed

Today, the UN Climate Conference kicks off in the Amazon rainforest—the first such event held at the epicentre of global environmental concern. In anticipation, UK-based 99designs by Vista has launched a visual campaign that transforms beloved children’s books into climate warnings.

The project couldn’t be more timely, as unprecedented climate disasters mount and global temperatures continue to soar. In the campaign, Winnie the Pooh stares at industrial development, while The Little Mermaid finds herself in a plastic-filled ocean and The Jungle Book’s Mowgli walks through a chopped-down forest, bearing an uncomfortable resemblance to the devastated landscapes left after the wildfires that destroyed over 18,000 homes in Los Angeles alone. Here is satiric wit at its most memorable.

As openly voiced skepticism over environmental action increases, these otherwise innocent popular characters force us to confront a stark question: What world are we leaving for the generation that still believes in happy endings?
