But before we do, I want to give thanks and offer a toast to an illustrator who made alcoholic delights so appealing to the eye …
Mixed drinks booklets were frequently displayed in my childhood home. I always wondered who created these late 1950s and early 1960s gems. And well, this particular Fleischmann’s Mixer’s Manual was illustrated by Mildred Sophie Porter (1904–1996), that’s who.
Porter worked for a brief period with billboard company Foster & Kleiser. Afterward she became a freelance artist, illustrating ads for many leading products, and contributed work to Sunset Magazine. She continued as a painter, and many of her pieces detailed her travels around the world. A founding member of the San Francisco Art Directors and Illustrators Club, she was also known for her ads for Kikkoman Soy Sauce, Ortho and various billboards and magazines.
Now, enjoy the holiday and have yourself a very merry high ball on me!
