taiwan design week 2025 prioritizes ‘design next’ future on humanity and planet

taiwan design week 2025 returns to taipei

Taiwan Design Week (TDW) 2025 opens at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei from 29 November to 7 December 2025, presenting its third edition under the positive theme: ‘Design Next’. Organized by the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), the festival steers the conversation from design focused solely on the individual to a powerful collective vision that champions the future of humanity and the planet. This shift towards highlighting the positives of design and creators — especially in the context of collective improvement — marks a crucial, optimistic evolution in the global design dialog.

Spearheading this effort is the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), which evolved from the Taiwan Design Center. TDRI is a national-level think-tank dedicated to integrating design into public services to cultivate an innovative civil environment, drive the sustainable development of industries, and improve the general quality of life. This quasi-governmental entity plays a critical role in shaping Taiwan’s national design policy, supporting industrial transformation through design methodologies, and exporting Taiwanese design to the world. Its mission elevates design, and ensures that editions of Taiwan Design Week, such as 2025, serves as a strategic platform for real-world change.

global design leaders convene in taipei

Signaling its global importance, TDW 2025 hosts the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR) 2025 conference, a world-leading forum gathering over 500 experts from more than 40 countries. This places Taiwan firmly on the global stage as a hub where design’s future is being actively shaped. Thought leaders, including Don Norman, Stephan Wensveen from Eindhoven University of Technology, and IASDR President Peter Lloyd, lend their voices to discuss how design can actively forge a better future.

The conference itself, hosted by TDRI and the Chinese Institute of Design, features six tracks and over 500 papers, all exploring how design is evolving alongside seismic shifts like AI, sustainability, and cultural change. The focus is on tangible areas of progress, such as health, aging, sustainability, and digital life.

local and international exhibitions and industry tours

Beyond the theoretical, TDW 2025 is dedicated to delivering impactful, real-world experiences. Visitors can explore the Golden Pin Design Exhibition, a showcase of award-winning works across product, spatial, communication, and integration designs. Curated by hidden-domain studio from Tainan city, the 2025 edition includes never-before-seen insights from the 2025 jury panel, among other new contents, aiming to close the gap between design expertise and the general public. The exhibition is an annual showcase of the winners of the year’s Golden Pin Design Award, an international-facing multi-disciplinary design competition based in Taiwan.

As an international affair, the Taiwan–Czech Design Forum spotlights a crucial cross-cultural exchange between Europe and Asia, featuring Czech designers and their work in sustainable fashion. To offer a hands-on look at design in action, the Industry Tour invites participants inside Taiwanese companies and projects that are actively rethinking technology, sustainability, and public services through design thinking. The festivities culminate in Design Night, an immersive evening celebrating Taiwanese flavors, art, and digital creativity, featuring designer Pu Chen.
