The Shining inspires Analog Hi-Fi Console by WOW atelier
WOW atelier has designed an analog hi-fi console that draws conceptual reference from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, translating cinematic themes into a piece of domestic furniture. The project was developed as part of a long-term residential collaboration rather than as an independent commission, allowing the object to be integrated into the architectural and interior framework of the house.
The vinyl console was designed and fabricated by WOW atelier, an integrated practice working across architecture, interiors, and in-house production. The piece emerged nearly two years into the design process for the residence, shaped through ongoing dialogue between the studio and the client. A shared interest in The Shining, particularly its architectural language, controlled compositions, and psychological undertones, informed the conceptual direction of the turntable. From the outset, the object was conceived not as an accessory but as an architectural element within the interior.

Materials and finishes reference Overlook Hotel interiors
Constructed from American walnut, the cabinet references the tonal depth and material character of the Overlook Hotel interiors. CNC-milled paneling reinterprets the film’s wainscot detailing, abstracted into a repetitive system that emphasizes rhythm and proportion rather than ornament. The overall form remains restrained and symmetrical, reinforcing its architectural presence within the space.
For the interior, creative studio WOW atelier introduces a contrasting material palette. Red wool felt lines the cabinet, creating a clear visual and tactile distinction from the exterior. Integrated linear lighting illuminates the turntable and controls, defining the listening area and structuring the act of vinyl playback. A typographic reference to the film, ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,’ is embedded within the felt and scaled to match the dimensions of a vinyl record sleeve, remaining concealed until the console is in use.
At the center of the composition is a limited-edition, numbered Technics turntable, selected at the time of its release. Vintage stereo components are integrated alongside it, chosen for both technical performance and compatibility with the overall design language. The LED lighting was calibrated to align with the color temperature of the equipment, supporting a consistent visual atmosphere.

translating cinematic themes into domestic furniture
The console was developed through WOW atelier’s in-house fabrication workshop, allowing close control over joinery, ventilation, access panels, and tolerances. Iterative prototyping informed the final construction, ensuring precise integration of technical and material elements.
The process mirrors Kubrick’s own approach, technical, exhaustive, and uncompromising. The intent was to create an object that could plausibly exist within the Overlook Hotel itself. Equal parts refined and unsettling, the analog hi-fi console operates as architecture at the scale of furniture: a place where sound, memory, and atmosphere converge.
