single draped roof unites brick, wood, and glass for teamtonbo house in the netherlands

landscape shapes home by teamtonbo

House in the Fields is a residential project in the Netherlands by TEAMTONBO. The unique location provided the starting point for the design: a plot where the barns and stables of a farm once stood, with miles of unobstructed views over meadows and forest. The design celebrates that view. While walking through the house, a different panorama unfolds each time – a 360-degree experience of the landscape. The clients did not want to build larger than necessary, so the program found its place in three separate volumes for living, sleeping, and eating. Each volume was given its own material and character: the living room was constructed from recycled brick, the sleeping quarters featured vertical wooden sections, and the dining room/kitchen were made of glass.

three volumes set against netherlands countryside

Three distinct volumes shape the house, while a single expansive, angled roof unifies them in one continuous gesture. The roof sometimes extends far beyond the volumes, creating spaces that are both inside and outside the building. The roof varies in height, thereby determining the spatial experience. At the veranda and dining table, it is only 2.2 meters high, while the ridge in the living room reaches 4.7 meters; every step through the house effectively offers a different feeling of space. The walls in the house are curved, guiding the movement through the house and to the various sight lines over the landscape. The house thus folds itself towards the landscape, and the landscape folds itself back into the house.

house in the fields follows functional design principles

The architects developed every component of the house in close collaboration with the clients, shaping each element around a clear, deliberate function. A long cabinet anchors the dining room, working simultaneously as a practical bench and as a visual extension toward the exterior. In the living room, a purposefully positioned window invites residents to sit and watch the sun set in the west. A small round opening offers a direct view of the front door from the couch, adding convenience to everyday life. From the brick wall, a compact lamp projects outward, tracing the pattern of the constellation ‘The Big Dipper.’ Together, the residents’ memories and dreams built the foundation for the design of the home.
