a conceptual Bluetooth speaker for Swiss sportswear brand On
Cloudbeat is a conceptual Bluetooth speaker developed by InOutGrid for Swiss sportswear brand On, extending the company’s sustainability framework into consumer electronics. The project examines how circular design strategies commonly applied to apparel and footwear could inform the development of small electronic devices.
The speaker is conceived as a response to the growing volume of electronic waste, much of which results from limited repairability and low recycling rates. Cloudbeat integrates repairability as a primary design principle, structuring its construction to support maintenance, disassembly, and material recovery. The product is designed for non-expert repair, with self-repair instructions provided through packaging and online resources. This approach positions the user as an active participant in the product’s lifecycle.

InOutGrid’s Cloudbeat aligns with On’s visual product language
To facilitate disassembly, the design eliminates adhesives entirely. Components are secured using standard Phillips screws, allowing straightforward access to internal parts. The speaker body and protective mesh are manufactured from polypropylene and heat-bonded to enable recycling without requiring material separation. A removable backplate, produced from recycled EVA shoe soles, provides a watertight seal while remaining easy to detach. This detail enables direct access to internal components and simplifies troubleshooting, reducing the likelihood of disposal due to minor technical issues.
If electronic components fail beyond user repair, the product can be returned through Cyclon, On’s circularity program, for replacement. The absence of adhesives further supports end-of-life recycling by simplifying material processing.
The creative duo behind InOutGrid, Ingrid Ng & Sarah Na, opts for a form for Cloudbeat that aligns with On’s existing product language. The portable speaker integrates a modular strap and carabiner attachment, enabling use across varied settings, from outdoor activities to indoor exercise environments. A range of color, material, and finish options references On’s footwear collections, reinforcing visual continuity within the broader product ecosystem.
