Matchstick Marvels is a unique museum in Gladbrook, Iowa, dedicated to the intricate, large‑scale matchstick models created by local artist Patrick Acton.
Since 1977, Acton has transformed a “hobby-gone-mad” into a full‑time vocation, gluing nearly 10 million ordinary two‑inch wooden matchsticks into highly detailed sculptures of architecture, pop culture icons, and complex machines.

Acton doesn’t just stack straight sticks; he pioneered a technique of crimping and bending individual matchsticks with needle‑nose pliers (without using steam or water) to create smooth curves and complex shapes. His portfolio of over 75 massive models includes a 13‑foot battleship USS Iowa, the United States Capitol (lighted, 478,000 matchsticks), Hogwarts School (602,000 matchsticks), the Millennium Falcon (910,000 matchsticks), and a true‑to‑scale Mars Rover Perseverance (880,000 matchsticks).
While the Matchstick Marvels Museum in Gladbrook displays about 20 of his models at any given time, over a third of his creations have been commissioned by and are displayed at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museums worldwide.
