Inside the four-bedroom home at 17 Broughton Street, Drummoyne.

The sophisticated kitchen is the heart of the home.

Sliding doors open the living room to the backyard.

Herringbone timber floors line the upstairs retreat.

Green tiles add a pop of colour to the bathroom.

Modern finishes have bought the house into the 21st century.

A built-in study nook.

A light-filled bedroom.

The rear extension.

Restored balconies capture ocean glimpses.

The swimming pool is primed for outdoor entertaining.

The living area extends to a timber deck in the backyard.

The nostalgic exterior and character of the house has been preserved for the next generation.

When Erika Banister and Dan Moore came across the Queenslander at 17 Broughton Street, Drummoyne, it was a shell of its former self.

But looking past its dilapidated state, the couple were captivated by the beautiful high ceilings, wrap-around verandah, and grand scale of its 442-square-metre block.

‘We believe the original house was built around 1891 and is distinctively a “Queenslander”,’ Dan says.

‘There is no other property in the Drummoyne area like it. Between the views of the bay from the upstairs framed by lush greenery, and the Australiana nostalgia of the Queenslander style home, we knew it was a rare opportunity to restore something special.’

In the few years since, they’ve undertaken the mammoth task of bringing the old house back to life.

Not only have they successfully restored the original structure, keeping its charming double-verandah and weatherboard exterior, but the interiors have been utterly transformed for modern living — complete with a new double-storey addition at the rear.

‘We engaged an architect when we first bought the house, but he was unable to continue with the project due to an unexpected year-long settlement,’ Erika says.

‘Given my background in fashion design, I decided to teach myself Archicad and took on the plans and design, [which were then] brought to life by Capital Building and Design.’

On the ground floor, a central courtyard helps bridge the gap between old and new, before the extension reveals the sophisticated living, kitchen, and dining space, overlooking a pool and landscaped gardens.

‘There is not a bad angle in that room; it is so open and bright. The sunlight from the afternoon into evening is magical, especially as it hits the Viola marble bench top — my favourite detail in the house,’ Erika explains.

A spiral staircase leads to the main bedroom retreat upstairs, complete with an impressive walk-in wardrobe. And despite its humble origins, there’s an undeniable sense of luxury revealed in the renovation, as timber joinery, herringbone flooring, and subtle pops of green foster a sense of warmth throughout.

It’s also nestled conveniently between the bay and the city, making it easy to embrace a sunrise walk by the water as part of your daily routine.

‘It feels like a rare pocket of Sydney, close to everything yet removed from the chaos,’ Dan adds.

Now that this magnificent family home is ready for its next chapter, it’s for sale. And this time, the buyers won’t have to change a thing.

17 Broughton Street, Drummoyne, NSW 2047 is for sale with Luke Grosvenor and Chris Nunn from Bresic Whitney. It will go to auction on Saturday April 11 at 3pm.
