A Designer’s Charming 1870s Cottage Has Hit The Market

On The Market

by Amelia Barnes

Interior designer Leigh Ellwood is selling the charming 1870s single-fronted Victorian cottage at 153 Gore Street, Fitzroy.

The interior designer purchased the property with plans for an extensive renovation with architect Donald Holt of Hola Projects.

The house receives ample natural light thanks to an internal north-facing lightwell off the living room and skylights.

‘The way light accesses and is present in this house from morning to evening is our favourite,’ says Leigh.

‘At the height of the day, sun streams through the many skylights and the internal light well, and by the afternoon, sun pours in through the rear garden space which funnels north light.’

The interiors have been given a light refresh.

The tidy courtyard garden.

Life currently has other plans for Leigh, so the house is up for sale, giving someone else the opportunity to bring this renovation to fruition.

Council plans are approved for a renovation designed by architect Donald Holt of Hola Projects.

Leigh Ellwood has completed over a dozen renovations in the past 25 years – some big and some small – like the refresh of this single-fronted 1870s Victorian cottage at 153 Gore Street, Fitzroy.

The interior designer purchased the property with plans for an extensive renovation with architect Donald Holt of Hola Projects. In the meantime, she began lightly updating the two-bedroom cottage, which receives ample natural light thanks to an internal north-facing lightwell off the living room.

‘The way light accesses and is present in this house from morning to evening is our favourite,’ says Leigh.

‘At the height of the day, sun streams through the many skylights and the internal light well, and by the afternoon, sun pours in through the rear garden space, which funnels north light.’

The exterior was also given a delightful bright yellow front door and window shutters.

Leigh loves the location of this home, which offers a surprising sense of calm and stillness among the liveliness of central Fitzroy. ‘You can quietly observe the passing parade from the privacy of the front bedroom, or retreat to the rear garden and feel a million miles away,’ she says.

The suburb’s best restaurants, Richmond sporting precinct, public transport connections, and the city are within walking distance.

While the council-approved renovation plans are now in place for the cottage, Leigh has decided to take a breather from personal projects, so she’s placed the property on the market.

The house is now for sale, ready for someone else to realise its full potential. We’re excited to see what’s next for this charming property!

153 Gore Street, Fitzroy VIC 3065 is listed for sale with Charles Atkins and David Ashby from Jellis Craig and will go to auction at 10am on Saturday May 16.
