café’s sand-hued sculpted volumes draw from its coastal context in India

Eventide Coffee is framed light and material restraint

Located along the coast in Chennai, India, Eventide Coffee by Billboards is shaped by its proximity to the sea and the consistent east light received on site. The project examines light, materiality, and spatial restraint within a coastal setting, forming a café environment defined by atmosphere rather than visual statement.

Positioned with uninterrupted views toward the water, the café is conceived as a response to site, climate, and surrounding neighborhood conditions. Early design studies focused on creating a space aligned with the rhythms of the area, emphasizing calmness and spatial continuity. The architects approached the project through material exploration and sensory planning, structuring the design around three primary aspects: tactile surfaces, volumetric clarity, and a coastal color palette.

The identity of the café draws directly from the Madras shoreline. Earth-based tones transition into lighter, sand-inspired hues, referencing weathering and the shifting colors of evening light. The exterior facade is composed as a rectangular volume that frames a large glazed opening. This window reveals the curved interior elements, including the counter and backdrop wall, establishing a visual relationship between exterior and interior.

Curved geometry and skylight define the café’s spatial core

At the center of the plan, an off-elliptical counter acts as the primary spatial anchor. Its expanding geometry directs movement outward while drawing sightlines upward toward a skylight and rear arched wall. A slow bar and pour-over station are integrated at one end of the counter, accompanied by dedicated seating that encourages gathering around the preparation process.

For the spatial organization, Billboards Studio avoids rigid zoning. Instead, circulation follows intuitive movement patterns shaped by ceiling modulation and curved architectural elements. A series of equidistant, low-hanging beams define the ceiling plane, responding to changing daylight conditions from morning through evening. Beneath these beams, a 16-seat community table supports workshops, informal meetings, and shared use throughout the day.

A central skylight captures and diffuses evening light, directing it toward the counter below through curved surfaces. Nearby, a circular volumetric cutout balances the geometry and frames views of staff movement. Adjacent to the community table, a merchandise display composed of stacked cuboidal forms presents products at varying heights and angles, ensuring visibility from multiple seating areas.

coastal tones shape Eventide café’s interior atmosphere

The primary seating consists of lounge-style sofas positioned beneath a curved ceiling edge that softens the overall geometry. Although the café volume reaches 22 feet in height, the design emphasizes perceptual modulation rather than vertical emphasis. Ceiling planes rise and descend subtly, guiding movement and defining smaller spatial pockets within the larger enclosure.

Material selections reinforce the spatial narrative. Textured walls and muted finishes reference coastal terrain, while gradual tonal shifts evoke the changing light of dusk, aligning with the project’s name. Light functions as a central architectural element, shaping perception and defining atmosphere throughout the day.

Eventide Coffee operates as a cohesive design exercise, extending beyond architecture to include branding and packaging. Through the integration of spatial planning, material strategy, and identity design, the project establishes a café environment structured around light, ritual, and measured architectural response.
