The owners of this Gold Coast house purchased the Currumbin property after relocating from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Its location and site (a generous flat block within walking distance of Currumbin Beach) offered a lot of promise, but aesthetically the house was a far cry from the textured and warm Melbourne homes they’d grown to love — particularly bush modernist homes common to the city’s outer north east.

They weren’t sure if a renovation alone could achieve this desired look, until engaging joinery and interior designers Mosh Home on the project.

‘They initially planned on a knock down rebuild, but after some consideration, flipped their strategy to focus on a renovation — retaining elements of the house that worked and reconfiguring main spaces like the kitchen, living and outdoor spaces to make the most of the natural light and surrounding landscape,’ says Libby Brady, director of Mosh Home.

Taking a conservative approach to minimise costs, Mosh Home adjusted the floor plan, documented by building designer Brad Ruddell Design.

The transformation is largely owed to the home’s updated material palette, which combines elements of Melbourne’s bush modernism, with the laidback style of California bungalows, and Japanese minimalism.

‘And of course, living in Queensland, we love a strong indoor-outdoor connection too,’ says Libby. ‘Having moved up from Red Hill, Victoria, our clients really wanted to embrace the environment and the outdoor lifestyle Currumbin offers.’

The clients weren’t willing to compromise on materials, specifying as much timber as possible throughout the project including on all the joinery, windows, and doors.

These feature spotted gum surfaces are complemented by terracotta tiles and establishing landscaping by CAPO Landscapes around the new pool and internal courtyard.

The project was completed in a relatively short timeframe including four months of design and 10 months of construction.

Libby says the renovated home is supporting the clients to live their best lives.
