Design Philosophy: From Natural Caves to Modern Comfort
Domain Architects looked to natural cave formations for inspiration, translating the protective qualities of these ancient shelters into contemporary furniture design. The result is a geometric pyramid that functions as both seating and architectural enclosure, creating what the designers call a micro-space for retreat and reflection.
Working with Bischiyano, the designers developed a piece that blurs the line between furniture and architecture. The Cave Chair doesn’t simply occupy floor space; it actively defines and shapes the area around it, transforming any location into a personal sanctuary where users can escape overstimulating environments.
Form Meets Function in Pyramidal Geometry
The chair’s distinctive pyramidal shell measures 165cm long by 165cm wide by 190cm tall, creating a substantial presence that commands attention in any room. The angular exterior features clean geometric lines, while the interior curves gently around the user, upholstered in continuous stretch fabric that eliminates visual breaks or seams.
The seat sits low at 30cm high, encouraging a relaxed posture that naturally slows you down and promotes longer stays. This thoughtful positioning, combined with the enveloping walls, creates an immediate psychological shift from the external environment, making the chair feel like a personal hideaway rather than ordinary seating.
Material Innovation for Acoustic Comfort
The upholstery combines 60% new wool, 20% nylon, and 20% polyester, layered over 2mm of acoustic foam throughout the interior surfaces. This material blend serves dual purposes: providing tactile comfort while creating what the designers describe as a muffled acoustic zone that reduces ambient noise levels.
The stretch fabric maintains visual continuity across all interior surfaces, creating a seamless cocoon effect that enhances the sense of enclosure. The acoustic dampening properties become immediately noticeable once you settle inside, with external conversations and office sounds becoming significantly quieter, making concentration and relaxation much easier to achieve.
