Chair concept gets inspiration from baking cinnammon rolls

When it comes to product design, you can always find inspiration in the most unlikely places. Even if this source of inspiration is not directly connected to the product you’re designing, it’s still interesting to see where a particular idea or design comes from. Whether it’s a passing thing that they saw or an ordinary task that they were doing that sparked an idea, really creative designers will be able to find innovation and ingenuity if they look really hard.

For instance, this new chair concept from Bored Eye Design came from the kitchen. Aside from designing furniture, another hobby that the designer has is making pastries. And in the kneading and twisting of the dough to make the kanelbullar pastries, they were able to come up with inspiration in creating a chair that is cozy, comfortable, and creative as well. The Bun Bun Chair was born out of the familiar movement they experienced while rolling and twisting the cinnamon bun dough into swirled shapes. That familiar movement—stretching, curving, looping—sparked the idea for a chair that would wrap around the sitter in a gesture of softness and warmth.

Designer: Bored Eye Design

This cheese curl-looking chair doesn’t really look like your usual chair with a seat and a back and legs. Instead it looks like a twisty and bendy playful sculpture that would be right at home in a children’s playground and a museum. In fact, aside from sitting in it, you can also even make it a bed for a quick nap when you’re tired. It’s not the kind of chair that you can use while you’re working, but more for relaxing and resting. The material used wasn’t specified, but it’s also probably really comfortable, more like a bean bag rather than regular upholstery.

The result is a seat that feels more like a treat: plump, plush curves that mimic the doughy spirals of a cinnamon bun. The structure evokes a sense of embrace, offering both visual charm and ergonomic comfort. It’s an invitation to sit, sink in, and maybe stay a little longer than intended. This piece stands out not only for its unique silhouette but for the story behind it, a reminder that design inspiration can come from the most unexpected (and delicious) places. As a continuation of the designer’s ongoing exploration of sculptural forms and human-centered aesthetics, the Bun Bun Chair is more than furniture—it’s a feeling.
