Dame Calls Out Derogatory Sex Toy Stunts at WNBA Games With a Cheeky Campaign

At the end of July, the WNBA became the target of an odd, unpleasant, and unsafe phenomenon: bright green dildos were being hurled out onto the courts in the middle of games. The stunts began in Atlanta on July 29, as the Atlanta Dream hosted the Golden State Valkyries. Since then, as many as five more games have been interrupted by the same prank, disrupting and disrespecting the players, while also putting them at risk.

It has since been revealed that a cryptocurrency meme group called Green Dildo Coin is responsible for these acts, throwing the dildos mid-game as pathetic attempts to steal attention and go viral. Is anyone surprised that cryptocurrency bros are behind this? I can’t say that I am.

Sexual wellness brand Dame has acted quickly to craft a meaningful response to these dildo-throwers, calling out this insidious brand of trolling (“linking women to sexual shame”), and coming to the defense of the WNBA.

In partnership with global creative agency Stereo Creative, Dame has reclaimed the narrative with a cheeky “The Green Dildo Coin” campaign, in which they’ve launched the idea of a bright green finger vibrator in the shape of a WNBA championship ring. If 500 people preorder the $100 Championship Fin, Dame will put the idea into production. Each sale directly supports female athletes, with all proceeds donated to the Angel C. Reese Foundation. To further their efforts to take back power from the trolls, Dame has purchased all “Green Dildo Coin” search ads.

It remains to be seen if this clever concept from Dame will ever become more than an idea, but the tongue-in-cheek creativity should be applauded nonetheless. In a market oversaturated by brands (and Crypto creeps) vying to create the most buzz-worthy, provocative moments, campaigns, and products by any means necessary, it’s admirable when someone gets it right.
