Gentle Fantasy Worlds And Woolbeast Creatures By Illustrator And Sculptor Melissa Sue Stanley

Melissa Sue Stanley is an illustrator and sculptor from northern Illinois whose work is rooted in the lush green and blue landscapes of Midwestern summers, especially open fields and deep forests filled with small moments of magic and mystery.

She is best known for her long‑running storytelling project Grisella’s Woolbeast Wayguide, a world of knitted, sculpted, and illustrated “Woolbeasts” that she has been developing for about 15 years and exhibiting in galleries across the United States and internationally.

Her practice moves fluidly between watercolors, ink drawings, polymer‑clay and wool sculptures, and knitting/crochet, with sketchbooks always active in the background. Thematically she focuses on gentle fantasy, forest spirits, traveling creatures, and narrative portraits that offer “a place of rest for travelers through the wild landscape of modern life.” She explicitly states that she does not and will not use AI or machine‑generated processes in her work.
