Lookout Above Litomyšl is An Observation Tower Crafted from a Shipping Container

The Lookout Above Litomyšl is more than just a scenic viewpoint; it’s a thoughtful response to the city’s long-term vision to enrich its suburban landscape with meaningful destinations. As part of the “Journey to Destination” project, the city of Litomyšl invites top Czech architecture studios to design features that encourage residents to explore their mostly agricultural surroundings, where forests are few and walking paths wind through open fields and meadows. These new landscape elements serve as motivation for locals to embark on morning, afternoon, or evening strolls, transforming everyday routes into memorable experiences.

Atelier-r, the award-winning studio behind the Lookout Above Litomyšl, was given the creative freedom to choose both the design and the site, provided they stayed within a set budget. The northwest edge of Litomyšl, along the road above Rasovna leading toward Kornice, was selected for its panoramic views. From here, visitors can gaze across the city, taking in iconic landmarks and catching the warm glow of the evening sun. The new watchtower is designed to amplify this potential, offering an uninterrupted, elevated perspective where you can even spot the town hall tower on Litomyšl’s historic square.

The heart of the project lies in its inventive use of materials and its underlying concept. Atelier-r’s approach was shaped by a commitment to environmental responsibility and reversibility, ensuring that the land could easily be restored to its original state in the future. In keeping with the city’s guidelines and budget, the architects sought a solution that would reflect contemporary issues like globalization and sustainability which are two forces that shape modern life and the environment.

The answer came in the form of a repurposed shipping container. This choice is more than practical; it’s symbolic. Shipping containers are global travelers, moving goods between ports and cultures, connecting people and economies. After their initial purpose is fulfilled, these robust steel boxes often face an uncertain fate. By reusing a shipping container as the structure for the observation tower, Atelier-r not only gives it a new life but also addresses ecological concerns. Recycling a container for construction saves significant energy compared to melting it down for raw materials—up to 8 MWh for a single 20-foot unit.

The result is an observation tower that stands as a bold statement in the Litomyšl landscape. The container’s industrial aesthetic is softened by its context among the fields and open skies. Climbing up, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views and a sense of connection to both the city’s heritage and the wider world. Lookout Above Litomyšl is a testament to creative reuse, environmental care, and the power of design to transform the everyday into something extraordinary.
