We met with Matteo Pivato, Chief Strategy and Business Developer Officer of Caffè Borbone, in the Italian Pavilion at Summer Fancy Food 2025, in the central box of ilNewyorkese, and he told us about the brand’s expansion in the United States, including new products, strategic partnerships and a clear mission: to bring the authentic taste of Neapolitan coffee to the American public.
Matteo, what is the American project of Caffè Borbone?Definitely, if we are here at Summer Fancy Food 2025 it is because we want to invest in the American market and grow as fast as possible. We also have production in the United States: we make the pods directly here. Our plan is to grow in retail, as much as possible, including through strategic partnerships. We recently started a partnership with Eataly, thanks to which we will enter their stores between the end of July and the beginning of August. In addition, we are launching products designed specifically for the U.S. market: k-cups, with three new brands, and ground coffee, also with three new brands developed specifically for the U.S. consumer. These products, unlike many other k-cups on the market, are designed, developed and roasted in Naples, by experts who have ensured that Caffè Borbone’s Neapolitan DNA is maintained.
You are doing, in a sense, a work of “educating the American public on the taste of Italian coffee”…In Italy we are number one in single-serve, which in America still has a very limited market share in retail. The American consumer is used to drinking long coffees, with particular and different aromas. We are getting closer to that kind of flavor, but without losing the identity of Neapolitan coffee, and therefore of our brand. We want to stay true to our flavor, even as we enter a new market.
How is the American public responding to these new products? We launched k-cups three weeks ago. The first results are interesting. We started from online, where we are very strong, and now we are also offering the product to distributors. Soon, we will be the only k-cup brand present at Eataly.
A hallmark of Caffè Borbone is sustainability, right?Absolutely. Sustainability is central to Caffè Borbone, from raw materials to the finished product. We work with safe and traceable plantations, with certifications that guarantee sustainability at every level.Even in terms of packaging, we offer recyclable packs and capsules. We also use clean energy and sustainable sources in the factory. It is a philosophy we are trying to bring to the United States as well.
How would you explain to an American why to choose Caffè Borbone over competitors?Espresso coffee was born in Italy, in Naples. Our k-cups are yes a little longer, as the American public likes them, but they contain a Campanian heart. Our advice? Try our product. It’s an interesting mix: it offers you something familiar but, at the same time, brings you closer to the authentic experience of a real Italian espresso.
