The Daily Heller: Next Stop, the 2NDFL Design Journal

There’s a new journal in town for design research and writing. FL:2ND, or second floor, highlights the thesis essays by the 2025 graduates of SVA’s MA Design, Research, Writing & Criticism (aka D-Crit) program, chaired by Molly Heintz. The tabloid newsprint publication, edited by Eric Schwartau, designed by Andrew McQuiston and illustrated by Sean Suchara, aims to become a welcome annual celebration of old-school ink-on-paper publishing.

“2NDFL is a place,” writes Schwartau. “It’s the floor of our department. … A floor is where meaning begins. Naming it transforms the earth under our feet into something intentional—something measured, defined and designed.”

At a time when writing through a design lens is very much needed, this new publication may lead to an even richer vein of essays, reportage and commentaries on the ways that design of all varieties impacts our lives.
