On The Market

The charming villa from the street.

The contemporary kitchen features a Carrara marble benchtop.

Exposed brick and concrete flooring marks the transition between old and new.

The living room, kitchen, and meals space are interwoven with sunny courtyard spaces.

Original Baltic pine flooring was retained in the bedrooms at the front of the house.

Skylights filter dappled light throughout the home.

Moody tiles meet black-stained joinery in the bathroom.

This Victorian terrace has been standing in Windsor for more than 140 years, and it’s well and truly stood the test of time.

On the exterior, the classic Hawthorn brick facade remains intact, as does the signage with the property’s name: Cavan Villa.

There are plenty of original features inside too, from the 13-foot ceilings to the open fireplaces. But the three-bedroom home also reveals a contemporary edge thanks to a sympathetic renovation by architects Pleysier Perkins in 2019.

The beautiful juxtaposition between old and new is what instantly caught the eye of family lawyer Ferne Colls, who’s called 37 Mcilwrick Street home for almost four years.

‘I was particularly drawn to the dappled light and the shadow lines that are cast across the house, for the most part, of any given day,’ Ferne says.

Rather than a conventional open-plan extension shaped around the backyard, the floorplan has been interlaced with three private courtyard spaces brimming with greenery.

An elegant entry creates a sense of arrival, as the exaggerated hallway leads to the interconnected living spaces and courtyards at the rear.

Baltic pine flooring transitions to polished concrete to mark the transition into the modern part of the house, alongside an exposed brick wall, while clearstory windows overhead help to fill the home with natural light.

Sliding glass doors seamlessly connect the kitchen to the central garden room, complete with a built-in barbecue for entertaining.

‘Every room has a view to a garden or garden wall, bringing the outside in,’ Ferne says.

‘Being able to watch the movement of a vast sky across the day, [you] never feel closed away from the outside.’

Having recently listed the home for sale, Ferne says the new owners will appreciate the terrace’s undeniable liveability and walkable location — with the Botanical Gardens, Albert Park Lake or Elwood all nearby.

Talk about the perfect inner-city package!
