This Magnetic Pen Hovers in Mid-Air and Now Fits in Your Pocket

The Hoverpen that broke the internet in 2018, winning multiple design awards and ushering in a series of levitating stationery – it’s now back in its smallest, most portable avatar yet. Say hello to the Hoverpen Traverse, a hovering writing instrument small enough to fit in your pocket and become a part of your EDC. The pen’s two-part design still features the hovering base, but now it’s compact enough to fit around the pen and slide right into your pocket or bag.

Previous editions of the Hoverpen were designed as haute tabletop accessories. Made to be displayed on a large base that served as a platform for the pen to hover above. All that changes with the Traverse, which now turns the hovering base into a ‘cap’ that clips onto the pen during travel. When you find yourself at a desk, merely detach the cap and place it flat on a tabletop, and then gently dock the Hoverpen in its place, and you’ve got the iconic gravity-defying levitating action that the Hoverpen became famous for more than 7 years ago!

As an industrial designer turned writer, the one thing that really fascinated me about the Hoverpen was that it understood exactly what it was trying to do. It was trying to be the stationery equivalent of an expertly handmade Swiss tourbillon, designed and assembled to perfection. That bit of visual fascination, combined with function, is what gave us the Hoverpen. A pen that wrote when you need it to, but suspended in mid-air like modern art when not in use. With the Traverse, that pen now becomes EDC that true-blue art-lovers, engineering enthusiasts, and collectors can carry around with them.

The pen sports an all-metal machined aluminum body and cap, with a replaceable D1 refill that’s backwards compatible with previous Hoverpen models too. The cap houses a magnet array that enables that iconic levitating action, making the writing instrument hover at a precise 15° from the ground. Enough to enchant while also being the perfect angle to grip in mid-air when you need to write. At 17 grams (35 grams with the cap), it feels aptly weighted too, letting you glide across any paper with confidence.

Most of the innovation arguably sits in the Hoverpen’s cap, which snaps onto the back when not in use, somewhat blending into its body so the entire instrument fits seamlessly in your pocket. The cap’s small, yet stable enough to hold the pen without tipping over. You could have the pen hovering even in your palm. When you need to write, twist the pen and it goes from ‘hover’ mode to ‘write’, retracting the hover tip to reveal the ballpoint tip on the other end. It feels incredibly intuitive, and the D1 refill writes like a charm – it is a pen, first and foremost, after all. When you’re done, the cap comes with an integrated pocket clip too, letting it securely attach to the lining of your lapel or pant pocket.

To pair with the pen, Novium also designed a pocket notepad to match. Dubbed the Thoughtpad (a launchpad for your thoughts, no less), the notepad comes with a steel plate insert that lets you satisfyingly snap the Hoverpen TRAVERSE to it for easy carrying. The insert also keeps the pad rigid, so it doesn’t flex or bend during handheld note-taking.

The Apollo Edition Hoverpen TRAVERSE

In the interest of being inspired so heavily by space, this model of the Hoverpen now comes in a special limited edition too. The Apollo Edition Hoverpen Traverse sports a full-white body with black bands, inspired by the Saturn V rocket. Each Apollo Edition Hoverpen Traverse pen also comes embedded with a fragment of the Kapton foil from the Apollo 11 command module, visible through a window in its machined aluminum body. Only 1969 units of this Apollo Edition pen with the command module foil will be made, commemorating the year in which man landed on the moon.

Each Hoverpen Traverse comes with its levitation-enabling cap/base, an extra D1 refill, and an engraved Hoverpen collectible coin. The pen starts at $79 and comes in 5 colors – Space Black, Starlight Silver, Pale Blue Dot, Jovian Bronze, and Martian Dawn (Red). The Apollo Edition Hoverpen Traverse comes at a premium of $649, but also includes an additional textured Moon Surface holder along with a commemorative plaque, a certificate of authenticity, and a mystery gift (and the Apollo 11 foil-embedded pen, of course). Add-ons like the Thoughtpad or a leather pen holster can be purchased separately, and the Hoverpen Traverse ships globally… or in other words, it ships where any man has gone before!
