What would happen if a true original in the world of design wrote a love letter to The Silver Age of comics? Chip Kidd’s The Veracity Trap, that’s what. Kidd’s love for comics began with a childhood fascination for Batman (the Adam West and Burt Ward TV version from 1966-68). Looking back on that show even now, and with a design lens, Kidd says that the show was graphically groundbreaking—the camera work, the visual sound effects.

I loved that they were all-powerful beings that didn’t want to rule the world, but rather serve it.

Chip Kidd, on superheroes

When Abrams approached him to write an original Marvel title, Kidd’s answer was yes, even if he was a little intimidated. With illustrator Michael Cho on board, the two worked on a premise that put both Kidd and Cho in the story. When infamous Norse troublemaker Loki opens a portal between the Marvel realm and Kidd and Cho’s studio, you have meta storytelling at its finest. The spread below, when Thor and his comrades discover that they exist in “a codex called a comic book,” perfectly illustrates this blurred line between creator and their creations.

The Veracity Trap, as described by the publisher, is a “mind-bending, visually sumptuous saga that takes the Avengers—and you, the reader—to places that challenge everything we thought we knew about super heroes and the very nature of heroism . . . villainy . . . and existence.”

Chip Kidd is an award-winning graphic designer, writer, and editor. His books on comics include Only What’s Necessary: Charles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts, Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz, Shazam! The Golden Age of the World’s Mightiest Mortal, Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross, and Marvelocity: The Marvel Comics Art of Alex Ross, among others.
