What Matters to André Maciel

Debbie Millman’s ongoing project “What Matters,” an effort to understand the interior life of artists, designers, and creative thinkers, is now in its third year. Each respondent is invited to answer ten identical questions and submit a nonprofessional photograph.

André Maciel is a visual artist and creative director from São Paulo, born in 1986. He’s the founder of Black Madre and the father of Noah, age seven. His work blends narrative and design, driven by the belief that every idea starts with curiosity.

What is the thing you like doing most in the world?
The world is big and full of possibilities. What I love most is traveling, discovering new places, and observing how people live. And if I can do that with my family, then yes — I’d say that’s the best thing in the world.

What is the first memory you have of being creative?
I remember a painting I made for my mom on Mother’s Day. I was about six or seven. It was on a wooden board, with her in the center, wearing red and holding a heart with my initials and my brother’s. She still keeps it to this day.

What is your biggest regret?
Not having studied abroad when I was younger. Years later, I managed to do it as an adult, while working, but every time I see someone in high school or college overseas, I feel that longing for an experience I didn’t get to live.

How have you gotten over heartbreak?
My heart wasn’t broken by someone, but by something: basketball. Before the creative field, I used to play for my school and dreamed of going pro. It didn’t happen. Years later, I found in drawing and painting a new way to connect with something that truly moves me.

What makes you cry?
Stories of resilience. Life stories move me — and at the same time, they inspire me to create.

How long does the pride and joy of accomplishing something last for you?
With my seven-year-old son Noah, the joy is permanent. Being with him, watching him grow and become someone in the world, is a mix of pride and responsibility that never fades. With him, it lasts forever.

Do you believe in an afterlife, and if so, what does that look like to you?
I don’t believe in reincarnation as another individual. But I do believe everything transforms. When a star dies, it becomes a supernova and spreads elements that create new things. When a fruit falls, it feeds an animal that spreads seeds. Life and death are cycles.

What do you hate most about yourself?
Perfectionism. It gets in my way and eats up my time. Even with simple things, I can’t let go until I’m satisfied. I need to learn how to balance it.

What do you love most about yourself?
My visual sensitivity. It comes naturally. I’ve spent hours standing in front of a painting at a museum, completely absorbed by that world.

What is your absolute favorite meal?
The Filé à Oswaldo Aranha at São Cristóvão restaurant in São Paulo. A grilled steak with rice, beans, farofa, and collard greens. But it’s not just the dish — it’s the place, the vibe, the football-inspired tradition. The full experience.
