What Matters to Curt Schreiber

Debbie Millman’s ongoing project “What Matters,” an effort to understand the interior life of artists, designers, and creative thinkers, is now in its third year. Each respondent is invited to answer ten identical questions and submit a nonprofessional photograph.

Curt Schreiber is the chief creative officer at VSA Partners, a role in which he guides the company’s creative philosophy and establishes design standards. With over 30 years at VSA, he has been pivotal in transforming the agency from a boutique design firm into a brand-led customer experience agency.

What is the thing you like doing most in the world?

Who doesn’t love going to the beach? The sound of the waves, the feel of the sand, and the open horizon create a great atmosphere to relax.

What is the first memory you have of being creative?

I’m told I was drawing in perspective at age five, but the moment when I knew I wanted to pursue a creative career was in junior high. I was the set designer for the school plays.

What is your biggest regret?

I don’t have many regrets. I feel that having a regret is wishing you had done something differently or experienced a different outcome. That would mean my life would be different today. Maybe for better or worse. At this moment, I’m feeling pretty good about life.

How have you gotten over heartbreak?

I try to get over a heartbreak as quickly as possible. Especially if I lose a pitch. I get over it by walking through the steps we took and thinking about the one or two things we could have done differently or better. I keep that learning and move forward.

What makes you cry?

Movies like Rudy or The Pursuit of Happyness. Essentially stories that are known for their inspirational and heartfelt tone, focusing on themes of perseverance, determination, and the power of never giving up on your dreams.

How long does the pride and joy of accomplishing something last for you?

A long time, because I see it as one of the beauties of life.

Do you believe in an afterlife, and if so, what does that look like to you?

I hope so. Although I can’t even imagine what it actually would be. Maybe a dream that lasts forever.

What do you hate most about yourself?

I’m a procrastinator. For example, I knew about the request all week, and now here I am, hours before the deadline, answering these questions.

What do you love most about yourself?

People comment favorably on my positive attitude, so it’s something I’ve come to like about myself.

What is your absolute favorite meal?

My top three include Nobu’s miso-marinated black cod, Quality Meats’ NY strip steak, and Art’s Tavern’s grilled chicken sandwich with tater tots.
