What Matters to Eng-San Kho

Debbie Millman’s ongoing project “What Matters,” an effort to understand the interior life of artists, designers, and creative thinkers, is now in its third year. Each respondent is invited to answer ten identical questions and submit a nonprofessional photograph.

Eng-San Kho, is a partner at design firm Love & War. Originally from Amsterdam, he moved to New York at a young age and began his career as a creative director in film and commercial production, designing campaigns for brands like Coca-Cola, Burger King, and Adidas. Driven by the sense that he had more to give, he poured his savings into a small Brooklyn sublet and launched his own design firm – with no safety net. Since then, he’s built a portfolio that bridges hospitality, culture, and technology.

What is the thing you like doing most in the world?
Spending time with family. Travelling for work makes me appreciate the small stuff: a dinner together, a beach day, a walk with the dog, a tinker in the garden. Doing anything outdoors makes me happy. Moving to Southern California has been a gift. I get to live outside, year-round.

What is the first memory you have of being creative?
Finger painting. Eating crayons. But what really stuck was making my own skateboard magazines when I was twelve, cutting up imported American skateboard magazines and reassembling them with my own DIY layouts.

What is your biggest regret?
Not realizing sooner how lucky we were in those early years, working on incredible projects, surrounded by brilliant people. I wish I’d slowed down and appreciated what was right in front of me instead of constantly chasing the next project.

How have you gotten over heartbreak?
Time, mostly. It has a way of sanding down the sharp edges of everything.

What makes you cry?
Life, when it feels too real.

How long does the pride and joy of accomplishing something last for you?
Not long. I tend to reboot every day, a short memory, which probably helps keep me moving.

Do you believe in an afterlife, and if so, what does that look like to you?
Not sure what it looks like, but I imagine it’s calm. Kind of slow, flowy dreamstate. Or an exhale that goes on and on.

What do you hate most about yourself?
Impatience. Even now, I still catch myself reacting too fast instead of letting things settle.

What do you love most about yourself?
My thighs.

What is your absolute favourite meal?
Spaghetti and meatballs.
