“When Creatures Roam the Suburbs”: Exploring the Haunting Mixed-Media Artworks of Shaun Tan

Shaun Tan is an Australian artist, writer, and filmmaker from Fremantle, Western Australia, best known for his award-winning graphic novel The Arrival and the Academy Award–winning animated short adaptation of his picture book The Lost Thing.​

His multidisciplinary portfolio includes picture books such as The Red Tree and Cicada, oil paintings, sculptures like Singing Bones, and short films that blend narrative and visual art.​
Tan’s signature style is dreamlike and surreal, combining whimsical imagery with poignant undertones to explore themes of alienation, displacement, and identity.​ He studied Fine Arts, English Literature, and History at the University of Western Australia and has exhibited internationally at events including LightBox Expo and the International Literature Festival Berlin.​
