‘Seahorse’ ridges for concept wireless gaming controllers

Concept wireless gaming controllers LEVION fits pre-teens’ hands using a ridged design inspired by the form of seahorses. Designed for a set of thumbstick caps on PlayStation controllers, the project is aimed at players between the ages of 9 and 12. The designer’s reference for the shape was the seahorse because it holds its body in a vertical position. It has a curved spine that bends from the head to the tail, and along the length of its torso, the seahorse has a series of bony rings that create this series of rigid slides.

Then, the head of the seahorse sits at the top of that curve, and the snout extends forward. These four elements – the upright stance, the curved spine, the ridged surface, and the proportioned head – appear in the form of the concept wireless gaming controllers LEVION form, all helping the pre-teens to play with comfort. Looking at the design, the body of each stick cap curves inward and widens. The base, where the cap meets the controller stick, is the widest point on the lower half. The top, where the thumb rests, is the widest point on the upper half. From here, the midsection narrows, giving the thumb a point of contact at the top and a seat at the bottom.

Levion comes with raised circular pad for buttons

The ridges on the lower half of the body of the concept wireless gaming controllers LEVION run in horizontal bands. They sit at even intervals, similar to the ones on a seahorse. In the device, the ridges split the index finger and the base of the thumb for when the hand wraps around the lower portion of the cap when the user is playing for a long time. Looking at the top, it carries the PlayStation symbol set: cross, triangle, circle, and square.

These four symbols sit in the same layout they occupy on a standard DualSense face button cluster. They appear on the top of the stick cap as surface texture only, as they aren’t buttons. Below the symbols, there’s a circular pad raised in the center. Material-wise, the skin of the concept wireless gaming controllers LEVION resembles silicone or others that have a soft, rubbery texture. At the moment, LEVION is a concept by designer Vedika Bapat.
