handmade paper sculptures by zim & zou
Zim & Zou reimagines the vintage boombox and cassette tapes as vibrant handmade sculptures made entirely from paper. Designers Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann create these artworks with layers, cuts, and folds by hand, using colored paper. The series begins with a boombox, as the designers cut the paper to form the two speakers on each side and the central panel with buttons and controls.
The surface shows lines and circles that copy the real speaker grid, and the middle section includes paper buttons, sliders, and a cassette slot. The handmade paper sculpture by Zim & Zou uses blocks of color to separate each function, even focusing on small details like the buttons, sitting in rows. These parts have labels, and the cassette slot has a thin opening. Small lines show volume levels and sound marks, layered as the designers cut the paper into thin strips and placed one over another.

Reimagining vintage boombox and cassette tapes
Another set from the handmade paper sculptures by Zim & Zou is the cassette tapes. Here, the designers cut small rectangular objects, each tape having two round parts inside, which represent the reels. These circles are crafted with layers, with the tape body made from folded paper sheets. The boombox is shown with more parts visible. The handle sits on top, made from folded paper strips, and the sides show vents and small openings.
The vintage boombox and cassette tapes replicate the design of the original devices, just in a more vibrant palette. The series also shows a contrast between time periods because these objects come from the past, but the technique to bring them to life as handmade paper sculptures is current. Back to Basics II presents these vintage boombox and cassette tapes as playful recollections of the devices in the past. Somehow, they explain how the audio device is built and used by allowing viewers to study their parts while showered in colors.
